A Modicum of Freedom
Written by: Ryan M. Sero
Directed by: Tyler Brent and Ryan M. Sero
Winner 'Pick of the Fringe' Hamilton Fringe Festival 2009

In the dystopian future, the Ministry controls everything you do: where you work, who you marry, and also that you will stub your toe at 9:32pm on the door you forgot to shut. Ministry Writers are responsible for controlling every minute of every person's day.
Herbert Milk is a downtrodden Ministry Writer, wishing for freedom when, one day, he gets himself as an account and he is responsible for writing his own future...

A Modicum of Freedom is a fun satirical comedy about fate, free will, despots, governments, and a little bit of romance, too.

"A wacky, completely loveable narrative for the Bard's star-crossed lovers" - Gary Smith, Hamilton Spectator

"This play was flat- out hilarious.  It's really hard to do live comedy well, but Romeo & Juliet gets everything right: a brilliant script, exemplary acting, impeccable timing, top-notch production and a pace so rip-roaring that you'll miss some of the jokes because you're already laughing too hard" - Raise the Hammer

Richard III
by William Shakespeare
Directed by: Laura Welch

At the end of the War of the Roses, Richard feels miserable. He wants nothing more than the crown won by his brother, Edward IV. He sets out to take the crown by force and cunning, fueled by his envy and pride. He weaves a spider's web of lies, turning allies into enemies, and threatening to topple the entire kingdom as soon as he gains it...
Richard III is William Shakespeare's most lovably evil villain, as renowned for his charm as for his horrific acts. His scheming politician archetype is seen to this day in dramas such as House of Cards and Game of Thrones, and, far too often, in real life as well.

The Future is Female Festival

The Future is Female Festival is a festival of readings of short plays by women of all backgrounds on the subject “the future is female".  The festival is happening across North America throughout the month of March.  It is an expression of the hope that the future will hold equality for all.  In an industry dominated by men what better way to begin to bring about that equality than to create an opportunity for female playwrights to have their pieces heard.  Make Art Theatre with the support of the Artword Artbar has decided to participate in this festival.  We shall be reading 3 short plays ranging from 10 to 20 minutes in length.  They are: How To Date A Politically-Correct Feminist (Or, The Compassion Experiment) by Emma K. Harr, Low & Away by Demetra Kareman, and Press by Alice Stanley Jr.

Originally produced in 1986 this play is about three successful women living in New York.  One night, over dinner they realize they might not be as “successful” as they outwardly appear. Billie’s marriage, though fine on the surface, is actually stuck in a rut, Rhonda is hung up on an old boyfriend; and Judy can’t get a date with a straight man. The women part ways, and as the week continues, their situations change, due in large part to their friendships with one another.

Anybody Else
Thaddeus Blume often thinks about what it would be like to be happy - ever.  His whole life, he's struggled with just being happy.  Fortunately for him, at a trip to an art gallery with his on-off girlfriend, Josephine, Thaddeus runs into Sigmund Freud himself who - generously - offers to help poor Thaddeus.

What makes us happy?  What makes us unhappy?  Anybody Else asks this big, big question and explores it through the comedic lens of miserable, lovable Thaddeus Blume.

The Tragedy of Othella Moore
Picture
Esther Huh (frequent collaborator with Make Art, who you've seen in Romeo & Juliet: An Escapist Comedy and Much Ado About Nothing) has taken Shakespeare's Othello, modernised it, flipped the genders, and set the whole thing in a high school - what better location for a story of jealousy, rivalry, and revenge?  Huh's retelling follows cheerleader captain Othella Moore, beloved and revered throughout her school, save only by Amy (this production's Iago), who sets in motion a scheme to bitterly destroy her rival, Othella, tearing Othella's life apart piece by piece.

 Miracles Don't Come Cheap

Picture
An original comedy written by Ryan M. Sero .
Playing December 2015 at the Theatre Aquarius Studio Space

When Hollywood Producer Bob Gajos is caught doing...everything Hollywood Producers do, he decide to get a few community service hours in by directing the local Church's Christmas Pageant.  Unfortunately, that means big headaches for Sam Arkwright, the pastor, who is struggling with his faith, even at the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year".  Sam's going to have a hard time keeping his night silent with Bob wreaking havoc in his life.

A refreshing piece of alternative Holiday cheer, Miracles Don't Come Cheap is a Merry Christmas farce with deep laughs and a great, big, thumping heart under it all.

Much Ado About Nothing
By William Shakespeare.
Directed by Cadence Allen
In one of Shakespeare's finest and funniest plays, a villainous evil twin plots to ruin true love, a bumbling police captain tries to set the record straight, and people who love each other just don’t know it yet.
A stunning play where plot threads quickly weave back-and-forth, spun on with sparkling characters and peerless wit.
